I learnt programming almost 50 years ago FORTRAN with a pack

This answer was rated:

I learnt programming almost 50 years ago FORTRAN with a pack of cards and BASIC through a Teletype machine. I haven't done any serious programming since just excel macros and the like. I now want to get into programming again by the paradigm has changed. It's Python, Java, Object Orientated, Functional programming etc. Can anyone suggest a book (that's showing my age) that will help me catch up. A lot of books try to teach you programming from step1. I need something that can start me off at step -10, I have a lot to unlearn. etc
JA: Have you begun working on a solution? What Fortran code do you have so far?
Customer: No, I want to forget FORTRAN
JA: What are the full requirements for this task? How soon do you need it completed?
Customer: Help me forget the programming practice I learnt half a century ago.
JA: Anything else you want the programmer to know before I connect you?
Customer: Don't think so.

Ameen provided a series of suggestions, however, I don't yet know how useful the suggestions are. My question was a bit out of the ordinary and rather unspecific so I think Ameen provided as good an answer as he could. Only time will tell how good that is.
