When I try to set a filename on a document (i.e. Insert/Quick parts/file name) it gives me a response {FILENAME\*MERGEFORMAT} - but doesn't show the file name. Also on various listsm which I have have now been corrupted showing, for instance; {HYPERLINK"http://mywebb.tiscali. co.uk/bagely/page1/page13/page13.htm!\o"high"} - this for a list of books by Desmond Bagely.
When I print either of these document types, the errors do not show on the print.
How do I stop this happening and how do I get my many files back to how they were?

Can you, please, tell me do you actually refer to Word documents?
The text in curly braces you posted looks like field codes from Word.

If this is about Word documents, please tell me also which Word version you have.

Well, it depends on the version - for example in Word 2003 you would get that information by clicking on menu Help then select About.
If it is newer version you will not see the menus.

This is how you can turn showing field codes off:
1. Click on the Office button and click on "Word Options" button in lower right.
2. In the Word Options window that opened, in the left pane click on "Advanced"
3. In the right pane scroll down until you see the "Show document content" section.
4. Look for "Show field codes instead of their values" option and clear the check-box.
5. Click on OK button
