Hello my name is***** look forward to assisting and am very sorry to hear that you are having this problem.
hal.dll is a windows install file and can be caused either by the windows installation being corrupt or the hard drive failing needing to be replaced.
In order to test this you need a windows xp disc the same version including service pack you have currently on your computer.
I am not sure where you got a repair kit from but what you described would not be able to fix this.
Do you have a windows xp disc?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

yes microsoft office XP professional

Is it a recovery disc or just a windows xp disc? A recovery disc will only allow you to wipe everything off of the computer and bring it back to factory settings. Which means you would lose any personal documents, pictures, etc physically on the computer.

Hi all it says on the disc is:

Microsoft office xp professional

It also states genuine at the bottom of the disc

There is also info on don't make illegal copies of this disc and UNLICENSED SOFTWARE- illegal without seperate license from Microsoft Version 2002 Enterprise 0301 Part No x06-27636

That is not a windows xp disc, that is a microsoft office for xp disc. That will not work.
Without a disc you would either need to buy a new disc or bring it to a technician.
