page displays message saying " This page cannot be displayed"

started a couple of weeks ago shortly after change of router

Okay, is your network connection all right? That is, are you able to access the Internet using any other device connected to the router?

yes, wife desk top works OK, my laptop has stopped connecting.

it still connects to email

I see. Now on the laptop, please go to Start, type in inetcpl.cpl in the search field and press ENTER.

In the Internet Options window, click on the 'Connections' tab, then click 'LAN Settings'.

Do you see any option ticked there?

sorry for my delay. i am not very comp literate. 'LAN Settings' has ticked Automatically detect settings.

Okay. Please close all open windows on the laptop, then go back to Internet Options. Click on the Advanced tab, then click Reset > Reset. Click OK > OK.

Done that, re-open your browser. Does this make any difference to your issue?

when i click reset saying

resetting user customizations

disabling browser add-ons

Applying default settings

All three lines start with a tick

There is only a 'close' button, which does close internet properties but no change to browser

Okay. I'm fairly certain that the Internet issue here has got to do with Norton, so let's try uninstalling that first.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features > Uninstall a Program, then look for and uninstall the Norton program accordingly.

Done that, restart your computer and check if this makes any difference to the issue.

Norton 360 has encountered an error: 8504,104

has now said repair failed

i clicked 'close' and it is again saying failed

'open support gave same message about cannot display page

I see, no issues. Now, please download the Norton Removal Tool on the other desktop, using the following (shortened) link:

Save the file first, then transfer it to your affected laptop using an USB/flash drive.

Run the file on the laptop and follow the on-screen directions to remove Norton accordingly.

Done that, restart and check if this resolves the Internet issue all right.

I think i got norton as part of original package. If you could tell me how to do it i would be grateful

I see. In that case, it was just a trial version of Norton that was installed, and stopped working after the trial version ended.
