Ask Your Own Computer Question

Hello! I am IT Miro and I will assist you on this question.

What is the make and model of the laptop? Also, what happenes when the laptop is powered on?
Customer reply replied 3 years ago.

HP pavilion model 15-n032sa

SMART Hard Disk Error shows up when started followed by list of options

Hard Disk 1 [301]

That message indicates a problem with the hard disk drive.

Most likely, the hard drive has disconnected so you (your daughter) will need to get to the hard disk compartment, get the hard disk out and clean the hard disk drive and all the area around it from dust.

After that, re-connect the hard disk drive and start the computer.

Are you able to do that?
Customer reply replied 3 years ago.

I'll try that now, I'll just go out to the shed for a hammer!

The hard drive either disconnected or it failed completely. Let's assume it disconnected, so you will need to turn the laptop over, and unscrew all the screws to get to the hard disk drive compartment.

Carefully clean all areas and connectors from dust and re-connect it.

Let me know the results.

no improvement following suggested action

You still see the same error message even after disconnecting and re-conneting the hard disk drive as well as cleaning the dust?
Customer reply replied 3 years ago.

yes no change

In that case, it means that the hard dirks drive failed completely and needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, all the files are lost.

You can contact HP to get a new one. If the laptop is still under warranty, you will get a replacement for free.

thanks for your help. I got the impression this was probably terminal. An ooccasional vacuuming and decent anti virus generaly keeps problems at bay. Despite an error/fault code I did not have false expectations that you could fix all. This mainstream kit is not made to last forever.

This is a hardware issue, so anti-virus or any other software won't help - the hard disk simply needs to be replaced since it fails to be recognized by the computer.

To avoid similar issue in the future, I suggest you (your daughter) to keep a backup of important files, either on CD/DVD or on another (external) hard disk drive.
