My wife has just bought a Lenovo laptop, Windows 10. The Office program has a 'first run & install' feature, but although it appears to go through the process and gives the message 'all done' at the end, the program is not installed. Any help appreciated

What then happens?
I can see you are a first time user to the site. What we do here is either a question and answer type of conversation or remote support where I would actually connect to the computer and have a look and attempt to fix the problem for you.
Remote support can save a lot of time if you are not comfortable performing repairs yourself. Sometimes even with instructions you can make a mistake and make things worse.

'Windows cannot find WinWord.exe .....' is the answer
Can you type in Office.
You should see office appear, click it and run the installation again.
Let it complete and tell me if it then installs correctly please.

The answer comes up that it cannot find Office although the installation icon still remains on the desktop.
ok, what now happens when you click the install icon on the desktop?

It goes through the 'installation' procedure again. The message comes up 'You're OK to go', but no sign of the program being installed. Restarted, but still nothing.
Press the windows key + X and click on Control Panel.
Then click on uninstall a program.
Do you see office there in the list?

No. Have looked in the program files folder and it shows Office 15 folder with a lot off numbered folders and a file 'First Run.exe' When I run this it goes through the whole process again and I'm back where I started!!
Can I connect to the computer please to see whats happening.

The issue is we need to do the purchase as you have a trial version on the computer but that has expired, which is why it gave that messaged.
