May I know who I'm chatting with?
Are you logged in to the Mac? can you see the icons on the computer?
Hi,
If the iMac is working fine and the issue is only with the macOS update then please restart the iMac and then try again. Report back the result after the restart.
OK Please wait working on this.
What is your current macOS name? is it Catalina? Big Sur?
You can upgrade to BigSur directly without having to go through the update process in the iMac - here is the official Apple link to download the BigSur update - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-big-sur/id1526878132?mt=12
Let me know if any issues. Thank you.

By the way, I just tried myself on my own Macbook and it is taking a long time and spinning. It could be that there is Maintainance going on at the Apple end, can you give it a couple of hours and then try again.
