JA: How long has this been going on with your iMac? What have you tried so far?
Customer: its been checking for updates for 15 mins with just the spinning wheel happening on the screen

If the iMac is working fine and the issue is only with the macOS update then please restart the iMac and then try again. Report back the result after the restart.

You can upgrade to BigSur directly without having to go through the update process in the iMac - here is the official Apple link to download the BigSur update - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-big-sur/id1526878132?mt=12

By the way, I just tried myself on my own Macbook and it is taking a long time and spinning. It could be that there is Maintainance going on at the Apple end, can you give it a couple of hours and then try again.
