Customer Question

Hi,no have a brown discoloured patch on my upper left lip which has been appearing over the last two years. I saw a young distracted locum at my doctor's 8 months ago who said there was nothing to worry about and to put sun cream on it. I have a sister who has had skin cancer twice in recent years. I am now overseas for two months working , but since I've got here it's flared up and is spreading - red, itchy, rough. Should I be doing something more about it?
JA: When did skin cancer first appear? Have you used any medication for this?
Customer: I don't know it is skin cancer. I put tea tree oil on it to clam the inflammation down
JA: Got it. When was your last visit to a dermatologist?
Customer: I have never seen a dermatologist. I asked to be referred and the locum said no
JA: Thank you so much for your time. Finally, is there anything else in your medical history you think the Dermatologist should know?
Customer: I don't know

This is likely benign macule patch --not any melanoma or cancerous.

Since no significant change over time, that also suggests the harmlessness.

If you read my first para, it is changing over time. It appeared two years ago, and has recently flared up badly - red, itchy, rough. I have JUST got it to calm down after two weeks. Does that change what you think?
Expert:  Dr Basu replied 15 days ago.

That only suggests the possibility of seborrheic dermatitis.

You need to use topical steroid ointment --prescription Clobetasol propionate ointment 0.05% twice daily for 2 weeks will be better.

But needs prescription from your doctor.

Over the counter Hydrocortisone 1% ointment can be tried meanwhile 3 times daily for 10 days.

Please use Petrolatum jelly twice daily to prevent dryness.
