Hi, I have a Canon Power Shot A550 which up to now has functioned well. The batteries are charged and when I press the on/off switch the lens extends fully. However when I press the photo switch nothing happens. Could you please advise?
Many thanks

Does the zoom function operate?

Finally, does the camera attempt to focus (lens move even slightly) when you press the shutter release halfway?

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

No, the zoom function is not functioning. The camera is not focusing nor attempting to focus. The image in the screen is a series of vertical lines.

Unfortunately what you have described indicates that there is a problem with the ccd or the connection to it, and while your camera is not on the current list of Canon cameras for possible free repair, the information at the link below explains the symptom and since more and more models have the identical problem and your camera was made around the same time: click on or copy and paste the link into your browser

Note: Considering the age and present value of this camera, paying the cost of having it repaired (if parts were available), approximately £62.00 really depends on how attached to the camera you are. The standard "rule of thumb" is if the repair cost is greater than 50% of the value of the camera, it is not worth it. A good used Powershot A550 can be purchased for about £17.00 and I've seen a new one (old stock, open box) for as low as

Please keep in mind that my diagnosis & solutions provided are directly dependent on the accuracy of your description of the problem. As with any "do it yourself" fixes, success is a "team effort", since I can't see or touch the camera, and relies on the customer's manual dexterity and ability to follow the instructions well.
