also how is printer connected to computer..usb or wifi

I print mainly from my iPad with no problems
so are you getting the printer busy message on the ipad or on the printer

Yes I am on broadband.
please turn off printer and unplug power cord
keep the ON button on printer pressed for 10 secs
wait for 2 minutes and then plug in power cord and turn on printer
on your ipad, delete the printer and add it again and then try to print

were you able to add the printer back..once added does it give a busy message or there is no response from printer

My main computer windows XP
on your windows xp computer, follow the below steps
click start..control panel...printers
right click on printer icon and click on remove\delete
once done, follow these steps on the printers
remove the cartridge...turn off the unit....unplug the power cable..
clean the golden contacts of the cartridges and the printhead with a cotton swab dipped in little alcohol
once these steps have been done turn on printer and reinsert ink cartridges
on computer, click start..control the printers window click on add printer\device option on top
add the printer and once added try printing

My printer is now flashing alternately between the A4plain paper button and the up triangle.
1. Turn off the canon printer
2. Hold down the Stop/Reset button
3. Not releasing the Stop/Reset button, hold down the Power button, now release the Stop/Reset button
4. Not releasing the Power button, double click Stop/Reset button and release both the Power & Stop/Reset button - doesn't matter in which order
5. Click Stop/Reset button four times
6. Click the Power button to confirm the selected action
once done turn on printer
after about 2-3 minutes, try to print

I now have alternate flashing lights A4 plain paper button then the C button then the B button.
remove the A4 paper and see what error it shows does it show paper tray empty?

how old is the printer and is there any error code flashing on the printer

No, it is flashing 3 then changes to p then changes to 0 on the B button
The error code is a service error indicating an internal fault which usually needs the unit to be serviced.
check the paper feed tray, roller assembly area and the area where the carriage moved for any stuck obstruction like paper, paper clips, pins etc and if found remove it.
once done turn the unit back on and check
if still the error repeats then the unit would need to be serviced as either something has jammed internally or a sensor is failing
in either case the unit would need to be serviced to rectify the same
i hope you understand that in case of hardware faults i can suggest cleaning and reset steps but cannot make a bad part work again
