Customer Question

I have an old Canon E430 camcorder that I bought recently from a jumble sale, but the tape compartment is slightly broken. The main compartment that opens at an angle works fine, but the part that pushes the tape down into the compartment properly is jammed open and I cannot figure out how to resolve the issue. Any ideas?

Hi. My name is*****'m a camera repair technician with almost 30 years in the business and I'll be glad to help you with your question today. This is usually an electronic problem. Either the infra red emitter in the middle or the receptors on the sides have gone bad. It's usually one of the receptors and they are not available commercially. I usually just replace the entire tape mechanism but this one is old and they built them leaky capacitors. It can be fixed but you'd need to unsolder all the bad ones, and there's usually a bunch of them, Clean the circuit boards with acetone and then solder in the new capacitors. I've done 2 of them and learned my lesson. If you are looking for a good camcorder look for a Sony. They have the best reputation and the older DCR series are plentiful. I'd recommend the DCR TRV 350 or 351. They can record and playback in both analog and digital. Something newer would have an HDMI connection. If you look carefully, you might find a good one for around $100.
