Customer Question

I gave my dog half a rimadyl yesterday (as a one off and half the dose for her weight).
I had to take her to the vets today who administered a dose of metacam which she will now be on for a week. will this be ok?

Hello Richard, I'm Dr. Deb and I'll do by best to help you today.

We generally recommend a washout period of 3-5 days before stopping one nsaid (Rimardyl in this case) and starting another one (Metacam). To do otherwise, runs the risk of gastric ulceration.

However, having said that, if 1/2 of the regular dose of Rimadyl was given and only the one dose was involved, then Ella should be fine.
I do worry when a dog has been on chronic nsaids and we change from one to another but this doesn't sound like this is the case.

To minimize any potential issues, though, you could give Ella over the counter Omeprazole at a dose of 0.5 mg/lb once a day for a few days.
Another option would be Ranitidine at a dose of 1 mg/lb twice a day.

I hope this helps. Deb
