Good afternoon, I have a 6 year old Bernese Mountain Dog bitch, and would like to take her to France but I am concerned about giving her the Rabies jab !!?? .. How safe is it !!?? .. as I do not want to do anything that may affect her health either now or in the future as the average age for a BMD is only 7 years !! .. can you give me some practical and sensible advice, many thanks Desmond Ayto

Rebecca :

I am sorry to hear you are worried about Kazzy. You are lucky to live in a country where there is no rabies!

Rebecca :

My name is Rebecca. I am a veterinarian, and will do my best to help to help.

Rebecca :

I give the rabies vaccination almost every day, here in the US. Once in awhile, a dog will develop a lump at the injection site that takes awhile to go away.

Rebecca :

I have not seen or read of any link with the vaccination causing problems; what are you worried about? Has Kazzy been vaccinated for other diseases, such as distemper or parvo?

Rebecca :

The only way you can take her to Europe, or anywhere else besides the UK is to get the vaccine. They will not let her in without it.

Rebecca :

Since we have rabies here in the US, we give the vaccine every three years to all dogs, and I have not seen it cause problems. Since it has been around since Louis Pasteur, one of the first vaccines made, it has a long history of being used and of course improved over the years.

Rebecca :

I am not seeing responses from you; I hope you can see what I am writing!

Rebecca :

You really have only two choices: vaccinate her or leave her home. Even with a letter from a veterinarian stating that he or she does not believe in vaccinating Kazzy for a medical reason will not let her into France; they will insist on the vaccination.

I hope you can see what I am writing now1

Please let me know if this helps, and what else I can answer for you.

- thank you Rebecca for your reply, firstly I was not aware that ALL dogs have the vaccine in the US !! .. my main concern is the fact that Kazzy is a BMD, which as you know is a very delicate and sensitive breed and generally have to be treated with kid gloves compared to most other dogs and because of that I am worried that she may react adversely to the rabies jab !!?? .. can I ask if you have had any experience with BMD's and the rabies jab, and if so were the dogs all ok !!?? .. thank you Desmond

Yes, rabies is a real problem here, and it is a law all dogs be vaccinated.

I have vaccinated BMDs. I know they are sensitive, and can have a lot of problems. I do not vaccinate them for anything except rabies once they have had their puppy vaccinations.

I can understand your concern, and agree it would be best not to vaccinate. However, it is a killed vaccine, and in my experience I have seen fewer problems with it than with modified lived vaccines and bacterins (vaccinations for bacterial diseases like Lyme disease and Leptospirosis..

If you want to take her to France, you will have to do it.

Please let me know what else I can answer, or help with.

What have you decided about Kazzy? Is there anything else I can answer or research for you?

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

- thank you Rebecca, you have been very helpful but I am still undecided about Kazzy, maybe I should just err on the side of caution and forget the idea, my motto has always been 'if in doubt, don't !!' .. so I guess that is what I should do !! .. once again, thank you Rebecca for your help and advice, best wishes and kind regards XXXXX XXXXX

No doubt, any vaccination you don't need, don't do. Some of the problems in BMDs are immune related, so triggers like vaccinations should be avoided. Sorry she won't be able to go to France with you!
