My dog is 12 years old and after having an ear infection, for which she was treated by a vet, about 3weeks later she started scratching and chewing herself constantly.on closer inspection her skin all over is very very dry and there is a lot of flaking. I have been giving her some conditioning tablets but so far no improvement could you recommend anything?
Welcome and thanks for asking your question. My name is***** am a licensed veterinarian. I am happy to answer your question today. First I need to ask you a few questions so that I can be well informed and give you the best advice.

1- How often are you bathing her?
2- What is the name of the conditioning tablets you are giving her?

There may be a slight delay between your follow ups and my replies as I type out a thorough reply for you.

Hello Dr Peter I am bathing every 7 days with a herbal dog shampoo.
The conditioning tablets are Vetzyme.
Steve, it sounds like her coat is very dry. When the coat is dry it becomes itchy. If you have been bathing her every 7 days this can explain why the coat is dry. Ideally, you should bath her every 21 days. You see, dogs need their natural oils in their coat. Another possibility could be an infection (superficial pyoderma), which can have a similar appearance in the coat.
I would recommend you have your family veterinarian take a look at the coat as she may need oral antibiotics if it is an infection. In the meantime, bath her once every 21 days and use an oatmeal based dog shampoo to moisturize her coat. In addition, supplement with omega 3 fatty acids, you can buy this over the counter in any pet store. Give at label dose.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service – if you feel you have gotten anything less, please reply back. I am happy to address follow-up questions. Thank you for your business and I hope to work with you again soon!
