Aloha! You're speaking to Dr. Michael Salkin
I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. When we're concerned that there might be a pup retained, we palpate (feel) the abdomen. If an obvious pup is present, we then either X-ray or ultrasound (preferable) the abdomen in an attempt to determine if the pup is vital. If it is, we might induce labor (if possible) once again or perform a caesarian. If there are signs that the pup is dead, a caesarian should be performed as soon as possible.
Should we find no evidence of a retained pup upon palpating the bitch's abdomen, we simply perform a physical examination of the bitch and live pups and treat any problems we might discover. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
