I have a gregarious yellow male lab (neutered) and a female

Customer Question

I have a gregarious yellow male lab (neutered) and a female spayed Lhasa Apso. They have been together for two years. Recently the Lhasa has taken to scratching up the carpet, digging at doors at night and urinating on our bed. This is unusual behaviour for her. What can we do?

I am sorry to hear about your problems with Orca. My name is***** am a veterinarian, and will do my best to help.
Since this started suddenly, I would start ruling out a physical reason for this change in her. Any other changes, such as eating less, drinking more water, sleeping at different times?
If she were mine, and because one of her symptoms is urinating on the bed, I would have a urinalysis done, to look for things like infection, unusually dilute urine, etc. It could be her digging and scratching is an attempt to go outside, because she has to urinate, and since she can't get out, she urinates on your bed.
If a urinalysis shows anything like an infection, this might easily be treated with a course of antibiotics.
If the urinalysis is normal, I would do a thorough physical examination. If that is normal, then I would try some natural sleep aids/anxiety reducers such as melatonin (3 to 6 mg at bedtime) or Zylkene, a veterinary product.
Please let me know if I can help with or answer anything else.
