my lurcher of 1 yr has eaten 4 ibuprofen tablets on

This answer was rated:

my lurcher bitch of 1 yr has eaten 4 ibuprofen tablets on Tuesday, she has been vomiting after eating food, Wednesday morning when I came down to her she had vomited 4 times during the night. I have given her lots of water and a small amount of milk. Thursday she vomited twice after food, she is lively, not drowsy. Has this caused serious problems , a friend (who is a vet) said that her stomach lining has been damaged but it will repair, she will be vomiting few days, give her plenty of water and small amounts of food. If she hasn't returned to her normal eating habits and the vomiting continues take her to the closest vet to get checked over.
Welcome and thanks your question. My name is***** am a licensed veterinarian. I am happy to answer your question today. First I need to ask you a few questions so that I can be well informed and give you the best advice.

1- How much does she weigh?
2- How many milligrams were the ibuprofen pills?

There may be a slight delay between your follow ups and my replies as I type out a thorough reply .

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

The pills were 200mg each and she weighs approx 35lbs

1- She is 35 lbs or kg?
2- Can you buy over the counter in your local pharmacy (chemist) Zantac (ranitidine) or Pepcid AC (famotidine)?

I will have an answer within 5-10 minutes of receiving the above responses. Thank you.

she weighs approx 46lbs thats pounds not kilograms, just weighed her on my scales

Steve, the dose she took based on her weight was of 40mg/kg, at this dose we can see gastrointestinal ulceration; this can explain why she is vomiting. This is what you can do:

1- Start her on Zantac (ranitidine) 75mg 1/2 tablet every 12 hours next 7-10 days. You can buy zantac over the counter in any pharmacy (chemist).
2- Change her diet to rice (50%) and boiled boneless chicken or ground beef (50%) next week.
3- Do not give things like pepto bismol (bismuth).
4- If no improvement in 1-2 days after doing the above I would have her checked by family veterinarian.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service, I am happy to address follow-up questions. P

Thanks Pete I will take your advice and start treatment tomorrow asap, I will also follow your recommendations regarding her diet. If she doesn't stop vomitting I will take her to the vets to get further treatment. Has the ibuprofen caused any lasting damage, say to her kidneys or liver?

No, doses above 125mg/kg we get concern about the kidneys. At 40mg/kg it is limited to the gastrointestinal tract; she will be fine.

Please reply if you have additional questions.

You're welcome.
