my dog is continuously sneezing heavily. my vet says it,s because of his age, there is no blood just mucus from his nose flying every where when he does it. is there anything I can give him to stop this.
Welcome! I am Dr. Altman, a licensed veterinarian and I am happy to answer your questions.
I am so sorry that Sammy is having this issue and your vet was unable to give you options for him
1.) Talk to your veterinarian about using neomycin-polymyxin B- dexamethasone eye drops in the nose which is a prescription antibiotic and also a steroid to reduce the inflammation of the nose but also treats with antibiotics to reduce the mucus as well
2.) Steam of the shower if he is having a sneezing fit will help dilate the nares or nostrils and help dislodge anything up in the cavity. This along with a humidifier or even an nebulizer should help give him relief
3.) Benadryl or diphenhydramine (Nytol I believe in the UK) can help if there is any type of allergic component or the sneezing is keeping him up it will help him sleep comfortably. It is an antihistamine over the counter at 1 mg/ pound ever 8-12 hours as needed and available at your local pharmacy.
Hopefully this gives you a starting point to give him some relief but please let me know how else I can assist you both today.
