My dog keeps trying to poo but nothing comes. Has been checked

My dog keeps trying to poo but nothing comes. Has been checked last week by his vet and he gave him peridale granules . These helped at first then we stopped them, but now after he has a poo he keeps trying again to no avail. He's very distressed when this happens.
Hello, I am sorry to hear you are worried about Alfie. I am a veterinarian, and will do my best to help. Are his stools that he passes normal? Or are they soft, or loose, or are they harder and firm?

They are soft

If he is straining after passing stool, and distressed and uncomfortable, I would consider trying a few things. One would be to check his anal glands for impaction or infection. This should be done by a veterinarian. If his stools are soft, then he may have "colitis", inflammation of the colon lining. If he were mine, I would check a stool sample microscopically for parasites, and I would consider a course of a prescription medication called metronidazole to reduce inflammation.

A diet change, to a "GI" diet might also help. He may be sensitive or allergic to an ingredient in his food.
Are you still there? Can I help with or answer anything else?
Thank for the great rating! Let me know how he is doing.

hi what would you recommend giving him to eat. We give him mince with dry wagg food mixed.

For dogs with intestinal problems, I like Royal Canin GI diet. It is a "prescriptoin" diet, so you have to get it from your vet, or from a website like (who will contact your vet first before shipping it to you).
