I have taken on a 3 year old ShihTzu from a rescue centre

Customer Question

Hi, I have taken on a 3 year old ShihTzu from a rescue centre but she sometimes eats her poos, why?

Hello, Thank you for rescuing Holly. My name is Rebecca. I am a veterinarian and will do my best to help. This may be a bad habit she got from being confined in a kennel too long with stool being left there. It could from her being bored, or hungry, or stressed if she was confined. Many dogs will just stop doing this once they feel safe and well fed. However, some will continue. It is not harmful or even abnormal for her to eat her own feces, but if you want to stop it the best things to try are picking up her stools as soon as she defecates, and/or adding a product called "Forbid" to her food. About half of dogs being given Forbid will stop this habit. Let me know if I can help with or answer anything else.
