Customer Question

Hi there, My puppy is a 5 month old Whippet.
Last Thursday we went for a walk and he was pulling a lot on his collar & lead due to being very excited around other dogs. and he kept choking himself, I did try to make heal so he would not choke. he then ate grass but was not sick. Since then he has being doing a gag cough daily. but only once a day.
He is happy, running about, eating drinking and pooing as normal.Should I be concerned ?Thank you,
Rebecca

Hi there, you are through to Dr Linda, a UK based vet.

I am personally unable to make calls but can talk via typing if that is ok?

From his symptoms, I would be most suspicious of a viral cough such as Kennel Cough. It has been rife in the UK right now. Dogs tend to have a harsh cough but are otherwise well (eating and playful).

The cough tends to last 1-2 weeks and then should resolve without treatment. We must keep dogs away from others so they don't pass it on. If a dog becomes unwell, a vet visit is needed as they may require medicine such as antibiotics.

Other potential causes would include a foreign body (such as a grass bladder) or a laryngitis. If he is eating well, I wouldn't be overly concerned. Hopefully the signs resolve shortly and he remains well.

Hi Dr Linda!Thank you so much. Well he lives with his brother so I am unable to separate them.He isnt continually coughing just the odd gag, like he wants to cough something up or be sick.Should I keep an eye on him, what symptoms should I look out for ?thank you,
Expert:  Dr L Simmon replied 22 days ago.

Don't worry about separating from his brother as it would be too late now, his brother may well have natural resistance if not showing signs right now.

The cough associated with Kennel Cough sounds just as you describe.

If he is eating and not vomiting, this would be more likely.

As I say, you should find he improves shortly.

If not though, a vet examine is best, ***** ***** there is more going on.

If the cough lasts more than 10 days, is not improving, or if he develops other symptoms, I would have him seen.
