I have a nearly two year old Irish terrier and on her belly

Customer Question

Hi I have a nearly two year old Irish terrier and on her belly I’ve noticed a dark brown freckle type thing. It doesn’t appear raised and doesn’t seem to be painful, but on the other side of her belly there’s a teeny one as well. She likes to lie in the sun but never lies on her belly in the sun and doesn’t lie long enough to cause a problem really. Any advice?

Olives freckle is flat and it’s an a hairless area and she has been sunbathing. It is most likely to be a freckle as you say. Olive is young so the chances of a melanoma for example are much less. However please do check with your vet in the next few weeks to put your mind at rest as a physical exam is always preferable to a photo. They will tell you if a needle biopsy is indicated.

Ok that’s put my mind at rest. I will most likely speak try and take her next week.
In the interim, what can I do in terms of sun, shall I discourage her from sitting out there or get her dog sun cream?
Expert:  Susan MRCVS replied 11 days ago.

Yes you can get pet sun screen although we tend to only recommended it for white cats (who do get melanomas on their ears and noses). I think skin tumours caused by sun damage are very rare in dogs. I used to let my dogs sunbathe and their belly skin definitely became tanned and sometimes freckled.

Features that indicate this freckle might be more worrisome are a red ring around it, feeling raised, growing or changing quickly and any discharge.
