Hi,We have an 11 year old patterdale terrier who barks for attention when visitors are in or when we are sitting at night when she gets bored.Giving her something amuse her keeps her quiet but how do we stop the barking without constantly needing to give her something?

Hello and thank you for using this site to help you.

Generally when we want to distinguish an undesired behavior we replace it with one that is desired.

The desired behavior is one that yields the reward.

I would suggest teaching her the difference between speak and quiet so she only speaks on command and is quiet on command.

YOu also have to be mindful of what type of attention she does get when barking from you and from company. She must be getting a reward in some way as she continues to do it.

Speak & Quiet
