If you did not use perfectly standard and Brother-made ink supplies, it is quite probable that the problem was caused by non-manufacturer ink viscosity, drying time, consistency, etc. being wrong for the particular printer involved, leading to the problem you have observed.
But that's a guess... I need to ask whether you used perfectly standard Brother ink supplies, or some form of 'clone ink' etc. ?

I am aware that with a device as old as the one you are using, finding standard ink might be difficult. But let me know; I may be able to assist you with that.

If the cartridges you are currently using are of Brother manufacture, I recommend continuing to use them.

might be worth going with, if you are not using Brother-made cartridges at all. (Though the color one is Lexmark-made and I cannot be sure it is worth trying, at least the Brother black ink is from a recycled/reused cartridge... probably good, unless the ink it was refilled with is second-rate.)
