am I able to connect a USB WiFi adapter to my LG 50PG3000 TV it is a 2009 model? In addition the firmware is not updating. I have tried to use the USB port to download the firmware upgrade from LG but nothing happens

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble.
The short answer is that no, you cannot. This is not a "smart" model tv, and it has no ability to use a wifi adapter or otherwise connect to a network or the internet.
If you're trying to do a firmware update and it won't take, then you may be using the wrong file or have it loaded to your usb stick incorrectly, or the tv is already on that version and doesn't need an update.
No firmware update would be able to add the desired feature though, that is a hardware limitation.
That doesn't mean that you have to spend hundreds on buying a new tv though. Instead contrast you can spend $30-100 on a chromecast, roku, appletv, fire tv, htpc or smart bluray player and get all the same functions and many more, with better performance and lower cost.
