I have an old (20 years+) Pioneer PL-J230 deck. The stylus

Customer Question

Hi, I have an old (20 years+) Pioneer PL-J230 deck. The stylus has started skidding across records. The arm adjustment appears fixed, factory adjusted indicated on. Am I able to fix or do I need to see a technician? Please advise
JA: How long have you had your PL-J230?
Customer: Since 1995 at a guess, may be earlier
JA: What have you tried so far?
Customer: not much! does not seem to adjust. I have bought a new stylus but have not tried yet
JA: Anything else you want the Electronics Expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: no

The counterbalance on the tone-arm may need adjusting slightly.

Try reducing the weight at the rear of the tone-arm to prevent it lifting and skidding across the records.

If you are unable to do this yourself, a local electronics or music repair shop should be able to do it for you.
