Customer Question

Hello My Brother HL-3140CW is making a grinding sound when printing.
JA: What's the brand and model of your printer?
Customer: Brother HL-3140CW
JA: How long has this been going on with your HL-3140CW?
Customer: It started after I changed cartridges prior to Christmas - I didn't have time to sort it before Christmas although now I need to get it sorted.
JA: Anything else you want the Printer Expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: No that is all.

Thank you for your question, my name is ***** ***** I look forward to assisting you.

I’m sorry to hear you're having trouble with your printer. I know that can be frustrating. Hopefully, we can get this resolved quickly.

Please note, a rating is only needed when we are finished.

Can you please remove the power to the printer (so unplug it from the power socket).

Then wait 10 minutes, connect the power again to the printer, turn it on and tell me please if it is now operating correctly.

Let me know the results please

I have done this previously and it didn't help. The printer still makes a grinding sound when I go to print.

Are you going to charge me £16 to speak to you?
Expert:  Richard replied 7 months ago.

Thanks

Can you take out the toner cartridges and check for anything lodged in the slots please that can be causing this.

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
It still made the terrible grinding sound, although it did print my pages...?
Expert:  Richard replied 7 months ago.

Can you replace the toner cartridges as it may be coming from one of these and tell me if it stops please.

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
I replaced one of the cartridges which was low - the same thing happened.
It made a loud grinding noise although eventually printed the page.
What would you suggest?
Expert:  Richard replied 7 months ago.

I am sorry to hear that.

It is the internal gearing likely one of the cogs has broken some teeth

If it is under warranty still I advise you return the printer to be replaced. If the warranty has expired, a repair for this is not feasible and it may continue to work indefinitely, so I would, in this case, advise continuing to use it as it is rather then to purchase a new one, if the warranty has expired.

I am really sorry about this, and if you have problems, or would like any additional information or assistance, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Thank you

What is the length of a standard warranty?
Expert:  Richard replied 7 months ago.

Normally 2 years but this is set by the place you purchased the printer from.

this type of issue cannot be fixed? I will need to replace the printer?
Expert:  Richard replied 7 months ago.

The gearing inside it would need to be, as I mentioned. If the warranty has expired, a repair for this is not feasible and it may continue to work indefinitely, so I would, in this case, advise continuing to use it as it is rather then to purchase a new one, if the warranty has expired.
