My incoming emails no longer have a blue star on them, but appear without, as if read. How can I get the blue star back?

yes it is only one off, the monthly subscription is only for unlimited questions and you have to actually sign up for that.
The stars which are normally blue will dissapear after it checks for emails again.
I would need to check your settings as it will be easier to see what has changed.
