My virginmedia email suddenly said last week that my password ***** incorrect. I was advised to change it but that has made no difference. In settings the password ***** is blank and won't accept anything. On my iPad I can receive emails but not send them. On my iMac I can do neither.

Where did you see the message that the password ***** invalid?

To confirm on your Mac you can send and receive e-mails without issues, but your not able to send from your iPad.
