Is it OK for people with Type 2 diabetes to drink diet soda

Customer Question

Is it OK for people with Type 2 diabetes to drink diet soda Mainly diet Coke). I know its not particularly good for you but my 85 year old mother, who has dementia and type 2 diabetes, likes it and we do not want to deprive her of it; she doesn't enjoy life much. But her blood sugars have gotten scarily high. Has this got anything to do with it? She drinks about a pint a day at most.

Hi. One pint of soda a day by itself wouldn't be very harmful to a diabetic but if her sugars are out of control right now she shouldn't eat or drink anything with refined sugar in it and she needs to contact her doctor. Hopefully she's on medicines for her diabetes

The point here is about diet soda - ie, a drink that, as far as I know, does not contain sugar. I am seeking confirmation that diet soda is not harmful to diabetics. My mother receives insulin injections from the district nurse team who visit her daily. She has frequent blood tests, and the insulin dose has been varied to try to control her condition. I feel that we are under some criticism from the (medically unqualified) care home staff for bringing her diet Coke, and wanted confirmation that this should not effect her diabetes. Could you therefore please confirm that diet soda is not harmful to a diabetic.

Sorry--didn't realize that it was diet soda. No that isn't harmful to diabetics. She can have that and it won't affect her blood sugars
