Customer Question

Hi, I have a 2002 Ford Mondeo 2.0TDCi 120000miles which is experiencing total power loss. This generally occurs when accelerating hard at speed, or towing. I end up coasting to a stop, restart and all is fine again. Combined with this fault the glow plug flashes. Generally there is slight loss off power with the glow plug light flashing which preceedes the total power loss.If I stop and restart this fault clears. The slight power loss has been an ongoing problem in the past, but previously unclearable and never followed by total power loss. This has been resolved by having the faulty fuel injector reset and all fine for a month or so.(Different one on each occassion)
I had the fuel filter replaced post diagnostics showing fuel pressure loss but fault still exists. I have also been digging and the Camshaft sensor seems a common fault. I fitted a new grey one about a year ago during diagnosis of another fault although it made no difference so I kept the old black one as probably still serviceable. Have just fitted the old black one and on a short test drive experienced slight power loss and flashing glow light which reset on a restart. Any ideas as fed up with continiously drip feeding the garage with my hard earned for this and many other Mondeo 'common' faults.

Hi there, Good afternoon to you

Ok the FIRST  thing that must be done before going any further is a diagnostic fault code check of the PCM
This is imperative to correctly diagnosing this fault right first time and saving you a lot of time and Money
As misdiagnosis of this engine can be expensive
The engine management system is very complex and technical on this 2.0TDCI
Thus why a fault code is an absolute must when diagnosis faults

I suspect the fault code will be p0251 / p0211 -fuel metering fault
The fuel filter is Thr most common issue but van be ruled out if it's been replsced

Injector issues are the second most common on the older higher mileage Mondeos and this will cause such an issue eg loss of power under hard acceleration
This is caused by excessive leak off from one or more fuel injectors
The best way to diagnose these injectors is to carry out a fuel leak off test on the injectors
After 4 minutes idle you should have around 20-25ml in the bottles
I suspect you will have at least one worn injector causing excessive fuelleak off Thus taking you into limp home mode under hard acceleration(glow plug light flashing )

Fuel pump failure can occur and contaminate the entire fuel clogging up injectors etc
But this is more rare

If you need anymore help or advice on this issue please let me know
If you are completley satisfied with my answer /advice
Kind regards in advance and have a nice day

Hi there

No worries

If the fault codes are for fuel meeting thenthe injectors must be tested for excessive leak off First

Regards in advance
