The red warning light (looks like a battery) keeps coming on

This answer was rated:

Hello Hello
JA: What is the model/year of your Ford?
Customer: the red warning light (looks like a battery) keeps coming on intermittently. Twice the car has completely broken down on us. The first time the car went into the garage (Trust Ford) we were told that the car required a software update this was completed but within a couple of weeks the light started to come on again. We returned the car to the garage but was told that no fault code was registering. The car has been back to a local garage twice more and again we are being told the same thing. We are now in a position where we have no confidence in the car and afraid to travel too far in case of breakdown albeit we do have breakdown cover. We really don’t know where to go next as we keep spending money but not getting anywhere with finding the cause. Ford Focus 2012
JA: Just to clarify, what are the exact lights you're talking about?
Customer: red light which looks like a battery
JA: Are you fixing your Focus yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: see above
JA: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: not at this point thank you

Hi there thanks

Ok the most common cause of your concern is a faulty smart charge regulator (internal of the alternator)

This causes an intermittent charging concern whereby the alternator doesn’t charge the battery thus the battery uses all it’s electrical power before the vehicle cuts out

To resolve you your issue you need to have a new alternator assembly fitted

If you need any further help or technical assistance going forward

please let me know and I will do my upmost to assist you

The alternator was checked and we were told that it was functioning ok

Hi there it probably was at the time of test but if you have an intermittent regulator fault this is what happens

The fact you lost electrical power when driving indicates the alternator wasn’t charging a symptom I have seen many tones over the years on the 1.6 Zetec varient

The issue will lie internal of the alternator smart charge regulator thus you should have the alternator replaced
