I am trying to fit a replacement wall light and light switch

Customer Question

I am trying to fit a replacement wall light and light switch I have the live wire from the mains going into the common on the switch and the live wire from the light coming from the L1 on the switch. The neutrals are both taped off and the earths are connected to the switch and the back box. When I switch on the power transfers well from the common to the L1 but the light doesnt come on. When I check the power at the light end it appears to be minimal coming through and additionally we seem to be getting power through the neutral wire. Any idea what I am doing wrong ?

First, what type of tester is being used?

How did you perform the tests?

Do you have one that has a readout of the actual voltage?

Or can you get one?
