Fans run at full power when ignition on & carry on for approx

Customer Question

Fans run at full power when ignition on & carry on for approx 2 mins after keys removed on 06 civic 2.2 i-cdti. Have disconnected thermo swich at base of rad, fans continue to run, went out when grey relay in under bonnet fuse box removed engine light came on but fans stopped when swiched off, then next journey no engine warning but fans faulty again.

Hello Trevor, my name is Andrew and I will be happy to assist you with your Honda questions today! So the cooling fans are staying on but when you remove the cooling fan relay the fans go out? I ask this because the relays are bad about having the contacts sticking internally and causing this type of problem. If that is the case I would replace the cooling fan relay as the first step and see if the problem continues.

Hi Andrew, apologies for late reply, I haven't been available for a few days. I have since removed the grey relay again and the fans continued to run so fault is not straight forward & today fault has vanished, for how long I don't know, but I'm not feeling that reassured at present.

Hi Andrew, back to same fault today, removed grey relay one fan stopped removed 40amp fuse both fans went out came back on , with both disconnected could here electrical buzz from top right of engine disconnected sensor plugs but couldn't locate, I think a trip to the dealer is looming,

Did this buzzing seem to be coming from the fuse box where you removed the relay?

no I don't think so but I didn't have my stethoscope to pinpoint it I will check during week as mine is at work let you know

Hi Andrew, buzzing coming from solenoid behind Bosch unit at back of cylinder head (transmission end). Could not remove plug as in awkward spot behind wiring loom under bulkhead. Relay controlled as cuts out after approx. two min's . Where is relay that operates solenoid as it cuts the fans out too? Tests were done with grey relay & 30a fan fuse 15 ( in front of grey relay) removed.
