I wish to fit a new ceiling light.
I have no power on the cable in the ceiling . (1.5 twin and earth)
There is no ceiling rose .
The old light fitting was an old fluresant, which I removed .
Please advise how to wire into my new light fitting.
No power with the light switch on?
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
that is correct..
Do you propose getting power from another light on the circuit?
Are you able to run another 1.5mm T&E from an adjacent one?
How was the original light powered?
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
This is where I am bamboozled as how was the other light powered .
I probably could run another !.5 mm Tand E . however it would be a bit of work as you can appreciate.
I have a cupboard with a light next door .it has a live cable going to a light. was going to fit a fixed bayonet holder for the cupboard .
Could I tap into that . at the light fitting . or ceiling rose . Presently does not have a ceiling rose, but could fit one.
Did you see my photograph with the tester which has been taken at the light switch .
hope I am making some sort of sense .
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
could it be a fuse that has blown . old type fuse box with fuse wire . I have not checked the 5 amp fuses .
You should check.
It is unlikely a single light would have it's own circuit unless it was part of extension works.
It may have tripped if the circuit has an RCD?
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I will check the fuses ..and revert back ..
Did the picture i senf not assist you in your diagnosis..
Sorry not really.
There is no neutral there do I would expect another live, neutral and earth at the pendant position.
Could something have pulled back into the ceiling?
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
dear thanks for your pointers ,
I will open a hatch in the ceiling and stick my head up with a light and look for another cable .
really appreciate the pointers ..and will revert back to you.
It is not a flat which I do not reside in so only go several times a week to carry out work as time permits.
Hope you understand .

Apologies , Dear ***** thanks for the pointers .
It is a flat which I do not reside in ...
That's fine - just come back once you've had a look
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
the cable 1.5 T&E that was connected into the old fitting is what I presently have.
However , I was informed the light fitting did not work.
It was an old fitting so it could have been a faulty starter or tube .
The tube did not have a lot of black at the baynot ends.
My guess is someone tried to mess around with the light fitting and thereafter left it.
Ok - perhaps it never worked?
You will need a LN&E at the light to get this to work.

noted ..
will follow your advice .
1) check for another cable above the ceiling .
2) check the fuses 5 amp for lighting at the main fuse box. Many thanks for the service, and will report back in a few days .
No problem.
Just reply once you have looked

Dear ***** , Many thanks for your patience which is greatly appreciated .
Over the weekend I went back out to the property and did check properly .
Unfortunately, all the fuses were fine, and also their was no other cable.
Regardless, I have therefore found a supply, and will run a cable ( supply) to the to a fused spur . (5amp fuse)
The spur which will be located next to the light switch.
Then run a cable from the spur to the light switch .
From there (light switch) a cable to the light fitting .
The cable which I am using is 1.5 T&E
Please advise if you think this will work okay.
Please can you advise on my light switch ie 1 gang 2 gang /1 way/ 2 way etc ..
I am unsure in this area.
Many thanks ..
If you use the supply from the spur straight through the light switch then all you have to do is cut the live.
This then goes into and out of the switch.
The cable then carries on to the light fitting position.
A 1 way single gang switch should suffice.
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
many thanks for the prompt reply .. and I am on route to go and do the job .
I wll be taking the feed from the spur . and into the light switch .
On the light switch it has "com" which is on the top of the switch and L1 at the bottom of the switch .
The negative from the spur joins the negative going to the light switch and the live goes into/through the light switch.
live of the spur goes into the L1 at the bottom of the light switch and the live of the same cable (going to the light fitting) would go into the "com "
Is that correct ..
apologies from being so thick ..
Live gets interrupted with the com and L1 connections and the neutral goes straight through to the light from the spur without being interrupted.
You can cut it at the light switch and join it again if it makes it easier to wire
You are correct
