Can an immigrant with leave to remain but not claim benefits

Customer Question

Can an immigrant with leave to remain but not claim benefits apply for financial support after separating from her husband? She has been in this country for 14 yrs and has 4 children. 3 of the children were born here and 1 of them now has a British passport.

What is the immigration status of the husband - when is she eligible to apply for Indefinite leave to remain?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It is a family visa, he has the same leave to remain as she does. She will be eligible to apply for permanent residency towards the end of next year. He is a student at the nautical college at present. She works part time but below the taxable limit.
