Hello, this is Jim and welcome to JustAnswer. I will be the lawyer working with you today.Sorry to hear of the issue. I will set out my written answer shortly.
They can do this under the mental health laws, i'm afraid. If you try to leave they may detain you or ask the Gardai for assistance.
Under the Mental Health Act 2001 you can be detained against your will if you have a psychological illness and by not detaining you, this would either pose a risk to yourself or others (or both). You can make a complaint to the HSE managers of your hospital/detention facility.
Or send an email with your complaint to this address:***@******.***
You should (if possible) also send a letter to :
The complaints officer, Michael Kennedy, Office of Head of Mental Health, HSE - Community Health Care, Oak House, Millenium Park, Naas, Co Kildare, Eircode W91 KDC2
If this does not help, contract the Mental Health Commission here: http://www.mhcirl.ie/
