I am getting a continuous audible sound when in drive but stopped

Customer Question

I am getting a continuous audible sound when in drive but stopped (say at traffic lights.) It stops if gear shift is put in neutral. It still sounds when driving off but cuts out at about 5 mph.

Is this serious - there is nothing in handbook?

if the noise goes away when the clutch is depressed then this sounds like the clutch release bearing is worn

typically these go on for many miles with no real issues but if the noise suddenly starts getting worse then the gearbox will have to come off to access the clutch and replace the part

Sorry you have misunderstood. The noise is a continuous tone alarm and the car is automatic. It is not a mechanical noise.

The car is in drive but stopped.

I was wondering what the alarm sound is for?

Hello Michael

a continous tone alarm is used for the following:

brake fluid level low - check amount in the reservoir

a failed parking sensor

also if the noise is accompanied by any error / warning message on the information centre in the middle of the dash then this would provide more clues
