Jaguar E type series 3, 1972, older quality restore/rebuild.

Customer Question

Jaguar E type series 3, 1972, older quality restore/rebuild. Fortune spent but almost unused for a long time.

Gearbox:- when selecting gear, shifter is vague but then snatches/lurches almost bangs into gear. Is this Normal?

Coolant system :- when idling for 15 minutes, it thru up about 2 pints of coolant, cooling fans did not come on despite gauge showing 3/4. Is this normal?

Ignition:- when idling the car seemed to misfire, pops thru the exhaust, slackened the dash pots on the carbs and all cleared but the idle came up to 1100 rpm?

I truly love this car and needs saved before it becomes any further abused from a non interested wrong owner.

Thank you for your advise.

Hello Martin

OK the shift may be a little harsh by modern standards but its shouldn't 'clunk' into gear so I suspect that the fluid may be a little low and the filter screen in the sump may need cleaning out

the cooling system sounds like its got an airlock to me and or the thermostat may also need replacing as it may not be opening fully so that should be an easy one to put right

as for the misfire I'd 1st check over the resistance of the spark plug leads ( 13-15Kohm / metre) and replace if any doubt or high resistance - Also replace the spark plugs if any of them fail this checklist:

if this is OK then I'd next balance all the carbs
this is best doen with a proper carb balancer, forget using bits of tube etc the correct tool will let you get them spot on
