I have a 2007 Jeep Cherokee 2.8 L Diesel fitted with the VM

Customer Question

I have a 2007 Jeep Cherokee 2.8 L Diesel fitted with the VM Motori engine. It has done 73000 Miles and its Timing Belt changed at 71000 Miles.

It was running fine and then all of a sudden it developed a knock and reduce power done about 40%.

I originally thought it was coming from the main crankshaft but upon investigation it appears to be coming from the top of the engine. It does not smoke and is running on all cylinders without a misfire.

Can you help?

Hello and Welcome..

My name is MIKE, Im happy to help / advise you.. I have had to switch us to QA mode from chat - chat has problems at the mo Im afraid.

The first thing to do is check the timing - it needs to be checked to see of the belt has moved / jumped at all. Its not unusual believe it or not after replacement.. you can get failed pulleys ( that the belt drives ).. or a tensioner fault - any such things can cause that has to be checked first. It needs to be checked to see if its come loose - it will be somewhat obvious usually once the cover is removed - but then either way, set up the timing to see if its still in "time" - or not - If not - you will find your answer there..

If its not that - then remove the top engine cover - rocker cover .. they are known for breaking valve rockers / springs ( tappets ) - valves and even camshafts all that needs to be checked ... From what you have outlined, Im sure you will find the fault there -one or the other as above..

--- Im very pleased to have helped you. You are welcome to come back to as / if needed. I will be off for a little while now but should you reply, I will always get back you asap after.

---- Meantime, I do just need you to please click on the "OK / Excellent ratings for me now -- and I Thank You for doing that.

Kind Rgds, MIKE.
