Customer Question

My wife was managing a department in an investment bank and went on pregnancy leave, on the day of her return she was told that there had been some changes and her staff were concerned about her return. Before her pregnancy leave she scored the highest possible appraisal level, and was up for promotion and was told it was a certainty, yet after announcing her pregnancy she didnt get it... now on her return her management were undermining her with her staff and was told she wont be in the running for premotion this year, when nothing had changed other than being off pregnant. She got pregnant again and due to complications she lost the baby, and was very ill - requiring some sick time off work. She is now due to return to work next week and she has just spoken to HR and her manager and has been told she isnt going back into her old role managing the department, and is instead to go back as a supervisor just over a couple of people. The people she will be supervising are a temp and a member off staff they are looking to get rid of. She also knows they are looking to offshore the team she will be supervising.

Are they allowed to completely change the remit of her role effectively demoting her for being pregnant/off sick - this strikes me as an appauling case of constructive dismissal and sexism?
