Customer Question

I paid a deposit and signed a contract for 2 windows to be built in to my front porch. I did this yesterday. I was never given literature or information re a cooling off period. I had had 2 previous cold calls by this firm but this one was arranged. I had already visited their online site and been assured that they were covered by a government backed scheme. For some reason I felt uneasy after the man left and went online to find that not only was this company not covered but it has been referred to Trading Standards for necessary action. I have now cancelled the cheque. Please can you advise me of what I can do?

Alex Watts : Hello my name is XXXXX XXXXX I will help you with this. Please note that I am a working Solicitor and may be on and offline as I have to attend Court and meet with clients, even at weekends. As such you may not get an instant response when you reply as this is not an ‘on demand’ live service, but rest assured I will be giving your question my immediate attention upon return.
Alex Watts : How much did you pay please?have you requested the return?
JACUSTOMER-qkmrxt69- :

I think it was £33. I did not request a return. What does that mean? I think I have a free 7 day period but only want an answer to this single question. I am sorry to be so vague but I am feeling quite distressed about this situation at the moment.

Alex Watts : I meant how much did you pay for the windows please?!
JACUSTOMER-qkmrxt69- :

I paid a deposit of £375 but cancelled the cheque later. The whole cost was £1500. The cheque for the deposit has now been cancelled.

JACUSTOMER-qkmrxt69- :

I spoke to someone at the company at 9pm today. She will return the cheque to me today..and seemed understand my actions

JACUSTOMER-qkmrxt69- :

in view of what I had read on line but said that her company had stopped being clients of that particular company some time back. She appeared angry

Alex Watts : So you have not lost any money then?
JACUSTOMER-qkmrxt69- :

with that company and said that they would be pursuing the matter. No I haven't lost any money but was worried that, in view of my signing a contract, I would be legally bound to it. I feel I should cover myself by writing a letter confirming that I do not want to continue with the construction of the windows. Is this a good thing to do, please?

Alex Watts : Did you sign a contract in your home or at their store please?
