My car insurance company cancelled my insurance without notifying

Customer Question

My car insurance company cancelled my insurance without notifying me on the grounds that I had missed an installment payment which was due on the 28th of April. I was neither aware that I had missed an installment nor was I aware that my car insurance had been cancelled. It was apparently cancelled on the 20th of May 2014. Unfortunately, I had an accident on the 25th of May which I informed my insurance company about. They wrote me on the 29th of May to tell me that they had cancelled my insurance. This seems totally wrong to me. I checked my emails to see if they had informed me via email of any cancellation of insurance but there was no notification. The only email they had ever sent me was to sending me my insurance certificate in October last year. I am worried now as the police are going to come after me as an uninsured driver.

Alex Watts : Did you not check and notice it had failed from your bank please?
JACUSTOMER-wa1d691a- :

I was not aware that it had failed

Alex Watts : It's bad news I am afriad.
Alex Watts : the bank should have written to say it bounced.
Alex Watts : In any event the law says if you pay monthly the onus is on you, not your Insurers not to only make sure you have sufficient funds but that It is paid every month.
Alex Watts : Therefore you are required to check every month to make sure it is paid.
Alex Watts : As it stands your policy is void and you are responsible personally for any claim.
Alex Watts : I am sorry if this is not the answer you want and certainly not the one I want to give you, but I have a duty to be honest.
Alex Watts : Can I clarify anything for you about this today please?
