What are the requirements for opening a pet shop? (Selling dogs, cats, pet accesories, food)? What are regulations? What documents are needed in order to keep animals in the shop for public viewing for potential buyers? What if pets are brought from abroad? Does it change a regulations? Can I open a shop in any borough of London? What about premises? Don't know where to start. Thank you in advance!

Hello,

You need a pet shop licence from the local authority in the borough where you intend to open your pet shop.

Once you have identified suitable premises which permit you to operate a pet shop (check with the landlord or letting agent), you need to apply for the pet shop licence from the local authority:

Once you have the licence, you may sell animals on the premises.

No documents are required for the licence, you just need to make an application using the application form e.g. see here:

You need to contact DEFRA for guidance on importing animals, there are different rules for importing animals from the EU and outside the EU. See below
