If I totally change the design of a character, but its still recognisable as that character does that breach copyright rules?

Confused?? You can tell it is inspired from the original character, but it is dramatically changed.

Customer:

If I give you a specific example it might help. Ursula from Disneys little mermaid is a fat middle aged woman. The new character has the same characteristics ie white hair, tentacles and follows the same colour scheme, but is a thin busty woman with tattoos all over her arms. I hope that helps.
