My wife was gifted £20k by her father 2-3 months before he died. He died, inbeknown to her owing debt card companies approx £43k. Where does she stand in terms of keeping the money gifted to her or having to give it back as part of his estate? Thank you.

Provided there is no aspect of fraud or deception ie your father in law paid the money because he knew he was dying and would leave debts - then there should be no recourse for the creditors of the estate to pursue the money paid to your wife.
