We engaged a contractor to build a conservatory for £20,000.

This answer was rated:

We engaged a contractor to build a conservatory for £20,000. During initial viewing and then during detailed survey we requested that the existing patio slabs be lifted and reserved for later use. The concrete floor slab was then to be laid on a sub-base of compacted hardcore. Instead, the operatives laid the concrete onto the patio saving, in my estimation, £500 for the reduced labor and materials as well as losing the slabs which were earmarked for another project.
Am I justified in paying £500 less than the invoice price?
Hello my name is ***** ***** I am happy to help you today. Was your request detailed in any written quotation you received?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Unfortunately, no, but we expected that a verbal instruction would be honoured.

Ok well you can withhold the money if you wish but you may find that your contractor will attempt to sue you in breach of contract to recover the £500. If you are taken to court the court will rely on the written quote. They will, of course, take note of any verbal agreement but it may come down to your word against his so there are no guarantees that you would win.
In the future I would suggest you insist on getting everything in writing.
If you have any further questions please do ask. If I have answered your question I would be grateful if you would take the time to rate my answer. Thank you.
