Regarding copyright and/or intellectual property:
I want to use a fictional character from a book in a merchandise venture. The author of the book died about 10 years ago and I will not use the character's name in any material, I will merely imply that I am talking about this certain character. I will have an image but again, it is my own image. Am I on safe grounds? Thanks

Yes, you are safe in my opinion as you are only referring to this character, but not using the character's image.

Hope this helps
