Could you please clarify some legalities on rotas there seems

Customer Question

Could you please clarify some legalities on rotas there seems to be no information available online. My employer currently writes the rotas with only a start time on them! This causes many problems, mainly not knowing what hours we are likely to have that week. A shift could be 10-12 hours long or be sent home as soon as you get there. Also we have no idea what our shifts are so no breaks are given and they send us home whenever they wish.
I would like to know what the law says when it come to how employers should regulate the rota. Please could you provide as much info as possible on this subject or a link perhaps. I would specifically like to know how much in advanced a rota should be provided to employees. How much notice should be given if cancelling a shift and if an employee can refuse the cancelation and request to work it. Can an employer send an employee home half way through their shift. And especially should the rota contain finish times!!! Any other information on rotas would be appreciated.
