I have an old friend whose husband has recently died. He has left a will leaving everything to his wife. Included in his possessions is about £20,000 in premium bonds. She has applied to have these transferred to her after 12 months. National Savings are insisting that she must have Probate. She believes this may be due to Inheritance Tax. The couple had no issue. She has the house which was in joint names and money in savings. Can Nat.Savings insist on probate and is a spouse liable to pay inheritance tax

The holding is so large that Probate is required to "Prove" the Will is valid and that the Bonds are rightfully hers.
There is no Inheritance Tax involved
I hope that this is of assistance - please ask if you need further details
